Opening today until January 2027, AI & THE PARADOX OF AGENCY is the sizeable, dynamic group show at Bildmuseet, Umea, Sweden, with works from a host of luminaries, including Planetary Portals, my collaboration with geography researchers from QMUL and UEA. A selection of our work from last year's show at The Photographers' Gallery London', will be on display. We present a list of many hundreds of African languages currently absent from LLM (AI) training data, along with access to the four films we created from archival photographs.
Through our research and these artistic interventions, we expose how imperial mythology is maintained through technologies across eras, and how these technologies attempt to silence and even absorb resistant voices and ideas. We also highlight how these resistances to imperial structures have persisted, regardless, and will continue to do so.

We also highlight how these resistances to imperial structures have persisted, regardless, and will continue to do so.
The films (with House of Thought), beginning with photographs from archives related to Cecil Rhodes’ violent imperialism, confront these imperial logics embedded in both the hierarchies and attempts at shaping “manifest destiny” within the archival photographs and the racialised and gendered assumptions embedded within indiscriminate datasets powering generic generative AI. To counter, we introduce human-made animation, agency, emotion, and even inaction.
